Starting Voltage Range

Select your machine type, stroke length and technique to see a starting voltage window. These windows are a studio rule of thumb, not measurements or manufacturer ratings: start low, tune from there, and stay inside your machine maker's range.

Machine Parameters

Recommended Starting Window

Baseline Starting Range
6.7 – 8.8
Volts (DC)
Relative Needle Speed
Medium
Relative Punch
Medium
Duty Cycle
Not usually adjustable on a rotary; if your supply has a duty-cycle setting, follow its manual.

Manufacturer Notice: Always inspect your machine maker's manual. Operating above the manufacturer's rated maximum voltage can overheat motor armatures, fatigue return springs, and void warranties.

The Readout is Not the Truth: Bench and battery display numbers measure what the supply sends, not the mechanical force delivered at the needle. Cord resistance, motor drag, cartridge membrane tension, and tissue resistance reduce effective power. Use your eyes, ears, and hand feedback rather than treating the digital readout as absolute truth.
